It’s October, a month filled with talk of ghouls and ghosts roaming about. You may be hearing some ominous noises coming from your home from time to time. Ominous banging, dripping, groaning and moaning coming from your walls. It sounds like something straight out of a horror film. But fret not, it’s probably coming from your home’s plumbing system. Definitely something that doesn’t require a medium to decode and banish. We’re here to tell you what to listen for and what they mean so you can better anticipate your home’s needs.
Gurgling
When you hear a gurgling noise, that most likely means there’s a blockage that is pushing air back through your fixture drains. This could be a warning before your septic system floods back through your fixtures. If you hear this sound coming from multiple drains throughout your home frequently, please give us a call to come and check it out.
Banging
Banging noises are caused by a shockwave that occurs when moving water suddenly stops, otherwise known as a water hammer. This kind of pressure can stress out your pipes so it is very important that you address it as soon as possible to maintain the integrity of your system. This can especially put a lot of stress on weaker joints throughout your system, and can cause a leak or a full on burst.
Whistling
One of the most common sounds you can hear from your plumbing. It could mean a few different things. If the noise is coming from your faucet, it most likely means your aerator has debris trapped inside and needs to be purged. Simply unscrew the aerator, let it soak in a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar for 30 minutes, and give it a good scrub. If the sound persists you may want to check your sink’s valves. Shut off valves are supposed to be either fully open or closed, if they are open half way, it can affect the water pressure and cause the whistling noise. In that case all you would need to do is open or shut the valve.
Humming or Vibrating
If you hear a humming or vibrating sound coming from your pipes it could mean your water pressure is too high. Make sure to check the PSI in your home. The best fix for this is to install a PRV (Pressure Reducing Valve) and ensure your home’s pressure is kept between 40 and 60 PSI.
Ticking
If you hear ticking within your walls, fret not. The sound is a result of copper pipes throughout your home expanding and contracting within your walls and rubbing against the wood. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.
